ABB / FIMER “GFI”

Insulation / ground fault

Error code
GFI
Category
Insulation / ground fault
Manufacturer
ABB / FIMER

1What the error means

The GFI (Ground Fault) indication on ABB/FIMER inverters of the PVI/Aurora series is a red LED on the front panel. It lights up when the inverter detects a ground fault on the DC side of the PV array, usually due to low insulation resistance (Riso). For safety reasons the inverter disconnects from, or does not connect to, the grid until the insulation is restored.

2Possible causes

  • Worn or damaged insulation on a string DC cable
  • Moisture or water in DC connectors or module junction boxes
  • Insulation fault in a PV module
  • Fault in the inverter's insulation measuring circuit

3What to do

  1. Switch off the AC and DC sides, wait a few minutes and switch the inverter on again.
  2. Visually inspect the DC cables and connectors for damage or moisture, without touching live parts.
  3. Ask the installer to measure the insulation resistance of each string with a suitable instrument.
  4. If the strings have normal insulation and the fault persists, the inverter needs to be checked in the workshop.

4Repair by Aineas

You send the inverter to our lab in Thessaloniki. We diagnose it, inform you of the fault and the cost, and the repair starts only after you approve it. Every inverter is tested under simulated operating conditions before delivery.
